Introduction<\/strong>.\u00a0Currently, the small and medium enterprises\u00a0<\/span>sector is a factor of sustainable development,\u00a0<\/span>with a significant contribution\u00a0<\/span>to GDP creation and providing jobs in most\u00a0<\/span>economies.\u00a0<\/span>Economic strategies and policies in the\u00a0<\/span>European Union, USA and Japan lay major\u00a0<\/span>emphasis on encouraging entrepreneurship\u00a0<\/span>and the development of the small and medium\u00a0<\/span>enterprises sector as a balancing factor at\u00a0<\/span>micro- and macroeconomic level.<\/span><\/p>

Aim of the study<\/strong>.\u00a0The paper approaches important issues on the small and medium enterprises sector as a\u00a0<\/span>vector of economic development in the contemporary period. It presents the SMEs delimitation criteria in\u00a0<\/span>the microeconomic landscape used in the European Union, USA and Japan. It also highlights the preoccupations\u00a0<\/span>manifested at European and world level in terms of promoting entrepreneurship activities, materialized\u00a0<\/span>in organizing summits and major events dedicated to small and medium enterprises, as well as in\u00a0<\/span>the operationalization of funding programs for them. The last part of this paper reflects issues related to the\u00a0<\/span>support SMEs receive at institutional level, emphasizing areas of assistance, support programs and services\u00a0<\/span>that various institutions and bodies offer to develop the small and medium sector.<\/span><\/p>
